On June 9, 2014 Senator Katherine Klausmeier unveiled the Maryland State historic plaque on Belair Road in Overlea to commemorate the Suffragists who walked from New York to Washington, DC. in the dead of winter in 1913. These brave women stayed in Overlea overnight and addressed the community at the old town hall, which is now the current home of the Natural History Society of Maryland. This plaque is the first of many commemorations to come that bring attention to the 100th anniversary in 2020 of women gaining the right to vote. Many thanks to Senator Klausmeier who established the commission and ensured Overlea was first to receive this most noteworthy distinction. The location of the marker is 6908 Belair Road.
